INTELLON SHOWCASES THREE GENERATIONS OF POWERLINE COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY AT INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM 2005 HomePlug 1.0, HomePlug 1.0 with Turbo and HomePlug AV Provide Easy Connectivity, Robust Coverage and Built-in Security
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, San Francisco, March 1, 2005 - Intellon Corporation, the world leader in powerline communications, today announced that it will showcase its three generations of powerline communications technology - HomePlug 1.0, HomePlug 1.0 with turbo and HomePlug AV - at this year's Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco. The demonstrations, which will take place in the Digital Home Community and the Digital Home Experience Zone, will highlight the benefits and capabilities of the company's powerline communications technology to enhance the consumers' digital home experience by providing easy connectivity, and robust and secure coverage.
Today's CE devices, such as digital media players, personal video recorders, gaming consoles, set-top boxes, Internet appliances and associated subscription services, require new levels of Internet access, home connectivity and PC/CE convergence. These products and services must be connected to each other and to the broadband gateway in order to be effective. Additionally, the connections must be reliable, easy to use, and robust. Adoption of powerline communications technology is an important step in meeting this growing demand.
Intellon will partner with several consumer electronics companies, including NETGEAR, BridgeCo and Gigafast, to demonstrate the various applications of HomePlug technology. These companies' HomePlug-enabled products will enhance the consumers' digital home experience by providing them with a robust network backbone for Wi-Fi extension, whole-house audio, digital security monitoring system and the distribution of high-definition (HD) content around the home.
"Our demonstrations at this year's IDF highlight the ability of our chipsets to easily and securely connect the disparate digital home entertainment devices," said Charlie Harris, Chairman and CEO of Intellon. "The showcase of HomePlug AV, HomePlug 1.0 and our new Turbo 85Mbps chipset emphasize the technology's flexibility to support and complement other networking technologies, including Wi-Fi, within the digital home. This capability makes it possible for consumers to connect any digital device, such as flat panel TVs, media PCs, security cameras and audio devices by simply plugging them into a convenient wall outlet."
Intellon developed and patented its HomePlug 1.0 technology, which enables powerline communications at rates up to 14 megabits per second (Mbps) with encryption security, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and Quality of Service (QoS). The company recently introduced a new 85Mbps powerline networking chipset, which is fully compliant with the HomePlug 1.0 specification. The new chipset offers the higher bandwidth performance necessary to drive next-generation home entertainment applications such as standard definition video, IPTV and whole-house audio. In addition, Intellon's next generation HomePlug AV technology will support transmission rates well in excess of 100 Mbps, allowing transmission of multiple audio, standard-definition video and HDTV video streams over powerlines.
Intellon is a major technology contributor to the HomePlug AV specification, which is being finalized now by the HomePlug Powerline Alliance. The IDF demonstration by Intellon is based on a prototype of the HomePlug AV specification.
