BANGO AND ACTIVEFONE ENABLE USERS TO DOWNLOAD RECIPES FROM TOP CHEFS STRAIGHT TO THEIR PHONE 26 September, 2005 - UKTV, second largest multi-channel broadcaster in the UK, is using technology from Bango and Activefone to provide a unique service that lets viewers of its UKTV Food channel download recipes straight to their mobile phones.
The UKTV Food mobile portal, developed by Peterborough-based mobile content specialist Activefone, offers over 6,000 recipes from top chefs including Anthony Worrall Thompson, Ken Hom and Ainsley Harriott. Ten recipes featured on that day's 'Great Food Live' programme are added every day. To access the mobile portal, users can either type in the URL www.wap.uktv.co.uk or simply text the word FOOD to the UKTV Food shortcode 64488.
Users are taken to the mobile site, where they can browse recipes and pay for content on their phone bill using the Bango Service. Each recipe costs 50p, while short videos showing close handwork are available at £1.50 each and there are also colour wallpapers of selected food photographs at £1.00.
"We love this new service for its convenience and accessibility," said Sarah Keefe, Marketing Manager of Bango. "It's so handy to be able to download to your mobile a recipe featured on the TV and then have the required ingredients accessible when you're in the supermarket."
Activefone integrated with the Bango Service to provide users with a transparent buying experience. Users are presented with a clear and concise payment page before they are billed, with the option to cancel a transaction before payment. Mark Watts, Operations Director for Activefone said, "We chose Bango because they are becoming the recognised industry leader for integrated billing services. Active3 (the Activefone media platform) is now leveraging global billing capability via the Bango solution."
UKTV is promoting the service during the Great Food Live programme, on the website, www.uktvfood.co.uk, and at the end of each day's Great Food Live programme. A message flashes up encouraging viewers to text the name of an ingredient to the portal to receive back a recipe based on the ingredient.
Bango is the leading direct-to-consumer channel for content providers who want to sell their content directly to end users and continue the direct, interactive relationship they already have with their consumers into the mobile medium. Content providers use Bango to sell a range of digital content from ringtones and music to games and videos.
Content providers simply register their mobile content through a web service at www.bango.com. They then use the Bango Service to enable access to mobile content through text "trigger" as UKTV use above and web site "triggers". The content provider controls the pricing and promotion of their content on-line and keeps track of traffic and revenues in real time through the same web service. Pricing is automatically localized for customers depending on which country they are accessing from.
