Acme Packet® (NASDAQ: APKT), the leader in session border control solutions, today announced that Korea Telecom (KT), Korea’s largest integrated wired and wireless communications service provider, has selected Acme Packet Net-Net® session border controllers (SBCs) for its international VoIP peering service. With this latest selection, Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs are currently deployed to support five VoIP and IMS projects at KT.

An Acme Packet customer since 2005, KT uses Acme Packet SBCs to support its residential and business VoIP services and domestic VoIP interconnects. After successful trials in 2007, Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs were chosen for KT’s international VoIP interconnect service, which went into production earlier this year. KT is using the Net-Net Session Director, deployed in KT’s international switching center in Seoul, to securely interconnect with over 30 domestic and international service providers.

At the interconnect borders with its wholesale customers, Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs satisfy KT’s critical security, service reach maximization, SLA assurance and revenue and cost optimization requirements. At these borders, Net-SAFE®, Acme Packet’s security framework, provides denial of service attack prevention, access control and topology hiding required to protect KT’s VoIP core network. The Net-Net SBCs also mediate differences between VoIP networks, including bridging overlapping IP address spaces and interworking and normalizing signaling protocols. Using SIP and H.323 signaling, as well as SIP-H.323 interworking, on Acme Packet’s SBCs, KT is able maximize the number of networks it can connect to and minimize required changes to its core VoIP network.

“From years of experience using Acme Packet’s session border controllers, KT is very familiar with the comprehensive security and control features they provide to our network,” said Eun-Sik Shin, Director, Network Group, for KT. “By taking advantage of KT’s strong global presence and the controls provided by Acme Packet’s SBCs, our domestic and international service provider customers can lower costs by leveraging our IP service infrastructure.”

“Large, international service providers like KT are accelerating the worldwide trend of offering VoIP interconnects to other service providers for PSTN or IP termination, bringing cost savings and increased revenue opportunities to both,” said Seamus Hourihan, vice president of marketing and product management. “By using Acme Packet’s Net-Net SBCs, KT is widening the reach of its interconnect offering while ensuring that its network is protected from attacks and overloads.”
