Beceem Selects Mindspeed Broadband Gateway Processor to Use Within WiMAX VoIP

“With our BCS5200 device, Beceem has once again demonstrated our technology leadership by enabling our customers to deliver low-cost, high-performance WiMAX CPE routers with integrated voice-over-IP (VoIP) and WiFi for commercial deployment in multiple mobile WiMAX networks worldwide,” said Aditya Agrawal, senior director of marketing at Beceem.
The BCS5200 is the industry’s first, complete, single-chip WiMAX with integrated voice and gateway router functionality, and started shipping in commercial volumes in the second calendar quarter of 2009. The BCS5200 single-chip device combines Beceem’s high-performance WiMAX solution with Mindspeed’s Comcerto 100 processor that supports a complete suite of VoIP codecs and IP network protocol stacks. Providing all the features of a voice and data gateway in a single chip significantly reduces the external component count and lowers the bill of materials (BOM) for voice and data gateways by at least 20 percent over existing solutions.

Mindspeed’s Comcerto 100 processor combines a high-performance virtual private network (VPN)/wide area network (WAN) router platform with a guaranteed low-latency voice subsystem. The Comcerto 100 answers the growing residential and business demand for gigabit class Internet Protocol (IP) networking, stringent quality of service, carrier-class VoIP, low power and advanced security.
According to market research firm In-Stat in its “Global Outlook for Broadband CPE Through 2013” report, released last month, several segments of the broadband CPE market are expected to grow considerably faster than the overall market from 2008 to 2013. “The markets for cable, fixed wireless broadband (FWB), and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) residential gateways will each exceed 30 percent unit CAGR from 2008 to 2013,” said Joyce Putscher, In-Stat analyst. “In the FWB category, the majority of global FWB subscribers are now WiMAX.”
