General Telecom, a Covista Communications company and a major provider of outsourced switching solutions for telecom carriers worldwide, announced today a new agreement with NextPoint, a leader in fixed-mobile connectivity (FMC) solutions.

General Telecom and NextPoint (http://www.nextpointnetworks.com) began their partnership in 2004, and under the terms of the new agreement, General Telecom will now assume a position as Strategic Business Partner and will provide direct technical support for designated NextPoint customers. In addition, the company announced that it will sell and distribute the NextPoint platform directly to customers whose VoIP-ready networks require IP-to-IP interconnectivity.

General Telecom offers products and services in both an outsourced and a resale model to help carriers succeed in delivering either traditional TDM-based or VoIP-based services. General Telecom has incorporated the NextPoint session border control, routing, and management product line in its solution suite. The new agreement will provide the company with a strategic role in the IP-IP global interconnect ecosystem by giving direct support to select customers in the NextPoint Community and by selling and distributing NextPoint products directly in North America, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

“General Telecom has acted as a facilitator and catalyst for the interconnect industry ever since the inception of VoIP,” said Kevin Alward, Principal and CEO, General Telecom. “Early on, we knew that the challenges of interconnectivity needed to be addressed with hardened, proven platforms. When the company initially embraced the NextPoint session management platform, it became obvious it could support many technical aspects of the interconnect challenge. Our extended relationship with NextPoint underscores the commitment of General Telecom to the IP voice and interconnect markets in a meaningful way.”

“Our community of IP-IP service providers has grown to more than 550 worldwide – a demonstration of the value application of NextPoint’s interconnectivity platform,” said Patrick Joggerst, Senior Vice President, Global Sales and Customer Support. “To sustain and grow this interconnect ecosystem, NextPoint reached within its extended community to find partners who could support our trailblazing customers and their NextPoint session management implementations. Our business partners also needed to demonstrate an unreserved commitment to driving the placement of NextPoint products in their respective markets. General Telecom has a long industry stewardship that is exemplary in both regards, and NextPoint is pleased to appoint the company as a Strategic Business Partner.”

General Telecom provides full-service outsourced network management services in support of IP-based services, including TDM-to-IP conversion and VoIP transcoding service. General Telecom’s Global Village is a clear demonstration of the company’s understanding of how valuable interconnectivity is for driving end-to-end subscriber offers for IP voice. This type of practical experience in providing IP voice and interconnect solutions to service providers will facilitate General Telecom’s expanded role within the NextPoint Community and will foster rapid and profitable expansion into new markets for service providers.
