RCN Corporation (NASDAQ: RCNI), a leading provider of digital television, data, and voice services to residential and small – medium business customers, announced today that it has introduced a new suite of hosted phone services that will change the way many businesses manage calls, features and costs.

“Successful businesses today need both a reliable high speed internet connection and a phone system that’s flexible, easy to maintain, provides productivity-improving features, and is affordably priced. We’ve been providing cable modem, T1, and Ethernet services for awhile. With the launch of RCN Talkware™, we’ll be able to provide an enterprise-class leading edge phone service as well,” said John Baker, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Product Management. “RCN TalkWare™ is an end-to-end digital solution that is hosted on our network, which can cut phone related expenses dramatically, without the complexity of a traditional on-site solution.”

While RCN TalkWare™ does take advantage of a broadband connection to provide Voice access, Baker explained that it is much more than just phone service over-the-internet:

* RCN TalkWare™ Hosted VOIP provides customizable control of every employee via the RCN TalkWare™ portal, and is accessible from any PC. For each seat in an organization, customers can configure call type permissions, feature sets and messaging. According to Baker, it’s as simple as point and click, and it’s mobile. Users can go anywhere on the job or manage a mobile workforce and still keep connected to the business and its contacts.
* RCN TalkWare™ Advanced Calling Features. In addition to basic features, like Caller ID, Call Waiting, 3-way calling and more, there are additional advanced features designed to help run a more efficient business:

Auto Attendant – A professional greeting can be set up, and the auto attendant can manage call routing options, including dialing an extension, call transfer and access to an available line in a specific department so a caller is never left unattended.

Simultaneous Ring / Find Me Follow Me – This feature allows customers to reach a contact even when no one is in the office. A Graphical User Interface (GUI) can be used to quickly set up call routing to available numbers simultaneously or sequentially.

Multi Access Voice Mailbox – Using this feature, users can check voicemail from any phone, within or from outside of the office. Any voicemail can be listened to as a sound file via email. Forwarding and logging voicemails, just like an email, is also possible.

* RCN TalkWare™ SIP Trunking enables customers to keep their new IP PBX, or legacy PBX, by replacing their Public Switched Telephony Network (PSTN) lines with more cost-effective Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking. Customers can save money with shared voice and data over a single connection, one circuit to manage both types of traffic. With the ability to allocate bandwidth to voice as needed, customers can add new lines one at a time versus purchasing them in blocks of 24 over a T1 circuit.

“With RCN Talkware™, remote offices can be connected via 4-digit dialing with calls at literally no cost, and lines can be added, dropped or reconfigured without the need for a technician to come to your office to reconfigure hardware. Plus, with broadband and your phone system both from a single provider, you have the convenience of a single customer support team to call,” continued Baker.

RCN’s fiber-rich network enables delivery of a range of broadband options as well as RCN Talkware™’s reliable Hosted VoIP service.

“Leveraging our fiber-rich backbone in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Chicago markets, we can deliver an incredibly high quality of service while proactively monitoring circuits and applications end-to-end,” said Mary Jane Horne, RCN Business Services CTO. “Our new Enterprise grade Hosted VoIP service offers new disaster recovery options for small businesses, which eliminates service interruptions resulting from hardware failures, fiber cuts or power outages anywhere on the RCN network. This also affords us the added flexibility to quickly evolve the RCN TalkWare™ features and service offering, which means we have the power to put the best products in the hands of our customers, at the right price.”
