Starent Networks Offers Femtocell Solution

Product to support UMTS, CDMA2000 and WiMAX Networks

Starent Networks, Corp. (Nasdaq:STAR), a leading provider of infrastructure solutions that enable mobile operators to deliver multimedia services, today announced it is leveraging its expertise in mobile multimedia networking to provide comprehensive Femtocell solutions for mobile network operators worldwide.

As mobile communications expand, subscribers are demanding greater access to the services they subscribe to independent of the network and their location. Femtocell networks are designed to deliver high-speed mobile services in the home or enterprise environment at a low cost, allowing mobile subscribers to more readily access services anytime, anywhere.

As a leading mobile multimedia networking company, Starent Networks provides packet core solutions to operators delivering services such as video, Internet, multimedia messaging and VoIP to customers. With this Femtocell solution, Starent Networks is demonstrating its role in extending these capabilities to the home and enterprise through Femtocell technology.

Starent Networks offers the Femtocell Gateway, utilizing its high performance, intelligent multimedia core platform that is well suited to the demands of the Femtocell network. Through intelligence in the gateway, mobile operators will have the ability to shape the customers’ network experience and transactions, while simplifying the requirements of the end-user access solution.

To deliver a comprehensive solution to mobile operators, Starent Networks is partnering with technology companies for the customer premise equipment (CPE) of the Femtocell network. This combination of gateway and CPE products will provide mobile operators a simplified path to the deployment of a Femtocell network. Starent has already begun interoperability testing with select partners.

“Femtocell communications require product and service capabilities that we do inherently well – network and subscriber intelligence, high bandwidth access, mobility management, policy enforcement, network scalability and robust availability,” said Ashraf Dahod, CEO of Starent Networks. “We’re leveraging our advanced technology and expertise to bring Femtocell networks to market as quickly as possible.”

Starent Networks solutions are access independent supporting multiple radio technologies, including UMTS, CDMA2000 and WiMAX. The solutions are designed to integrate into existing network environments while being readily upgradeable to newer access technologies and next generation network architectures, such as 4G and IMS.

Starent Networks’ Femtocell products are designed to facilitate industry growth by being open and supporting industry standards. As an active participant in the Femtocell Forum, 3GPP, 3GPP2 and other industry forums, Starent Networks is helping to promote and define Femtocell networking standards.

A Femtocell is a small cellular base station, typically designed for use in residential or small business environments that connects to a mobile operator’s network through a broadband Internet connection. A Femtocell allows mobile operators to extend service coverage indoors, especially where access would otherwise be limited or unavailable.
