“VoIP calls are not tolerant to packet loss- even a 1% packet loss can significantly degrade their quality. For data, fax, and video calls, packet loss - even at very low levels - can cause failures,” explained Sébastien Boyer, PLM at Media5 Corporation. “With this in mind, we have worked with major Tier 1 Service Providers who were concerned with the reliability of their VOIP networks given the lack of a common clock signal between two remote devices. With this new capability they can now provide reliability levels comparable to the PSTN”.
Currently most VoIP gateways available on the market suffer from clock drift / frame loss rates greater than 20-40 packets / million (PPM). Even gateways with “high resolution internal clocks” will have clock drift / frame loss of around 5 PPM. With the Mediatrix Remote Clock Synchronization, clock drift / frame loss rates will not exceed 1* PPM, which is comparable to traditional networks, and which means virtually NO Dropped Calls.
Service Providers can now have reliability levels in VOIP networks allowing them to replace their traditional ISDN networks - and with Mediatrix BRI gateways, and the Remote Clock Synchronization feature, an industry- leading CPE solution for providing SIP trunking.
A Unique Solution
The Mediatrix Remote Clock Synchronization utilizes a Master - Slave configuration of BRI digital gateways. The “IP Sync Master” unit sends IPSynch packets every few seconds to all the slave units allowing them to adjust their own clocks, thus synchronizing all units in the given network to one specific source.
Remote Clock Synchronization is available on the Mediatrix 3400 and 4400 Series BRI digital gateways
* 1 PPM achievable under good network conditions
