dmedia System Co. Ltd (dmedia), a leading Taiwanese manufacturer of navigation and wireless devices, and NextWave Wireless Inc. (NASDAQ: WAVE), a global provider of mobile multimedia and wireless broadband technologies, have teamed up to begin development on an advanced mobile WiMAX device that will debut in 1H 2009. dmedia’s aggressive move to bring new consumer electronics products to market is an example of the WiMAX leadership that is being driven from Taiwan, and shows dmedia’s dedication to deliver innovative products that spur consumer demand for mobile WiMAX services and devices.

Leveraging NextWave’s Wave 2-ready “No Compromise” NW2000 WiMAX chipset, dmedia will integrate WiMAX into its WiMAX Mobile Internet Device, G400. By embedding WiMAX into the device, end-users gain greater service opportunities, including mobilization of the Internet to enhance connection, navigation and mobile multimedia services. Additionally, as NextWave’s NW2000 chipset is optimized to deliver outstanding performance, very low power and enhanced integration, dmedia’s device will offer robust feature-sets to enable bandwidth-intensive mobile multimedia applications, including NextWave’s MXtv™ mobile broadcast service, streaming video, video conferencing, and Voice-over-IP (VoIP).

“As the WiMAX market begins to mature, our goal is to continue to deliver next-generation devices that go beyond today’s typical handset solutions. We are focused on constructing sophisticated end-user devices that can enable the value-added services that WiMAX promises to deliver,” said Daniel Shih, CEO of dmedia System. “We want to empower the end-users’ mobile multimedia experience, and needed a silicon partner that matched our passion. NextWave Wireless is that partner, as they are progressive in their thinking, offer best-in-class technology solutions, and have the same level of commitment to the global WiMAX market.”

In addition to offering optimized WiMAX chipsets, NextWave focuses on delivering an end-to-end mobile WiMAX solution that leverages its MXtv technology, a breakthrough mobile multicast and broadcast solution that has the potential to drive greater revenue potential through higher ARPU (Average Revenue Per User). MXtv is designed to lower the cost of offering high-quality, mobile broadcast services to subscribers. When coupled with the NW2000 WiMAX chipset, operators have the opportunity to raise the immediate value of their WiMAX investment by capitalizing on advanced service innovation.

“This is an exciting time for NextWave Wireless as we continue to build market momentum and extend our global reach within the WiMAX community,” said James Brailean, Ph. D., CEO, NextWave Mobile Products. “We are proud to have been selected to work with dmedia, a mobile multimedia device leader, on this innovative WiMAX product. By working closely with dmedia, we expect to advance our shared vision for compelling, mobile multimedia devices and services.”

The NextWave NW2000 family of advanced, second-generation mobile WiMAX chipsets is ideally suited for high-volume, small form-factor wireless broadband subscriber stations. The chipset includes the NW2100 family of 802.16e-based mobile subscriber baseband System-On-a-Chip (SoC) solutions, and the complementary NW2200 family of single-chip, highly integrated, multi-band Radio Frequency (RF) transceivers, which have dual independent receive chains optimized for mobile applications.

NextWave began to sample Evaluation/System Development Kits for the NW2000 family in Q2 2008; providing wireless device manufacturers, like dmedia, the opportunity to bring mobile WiMAX products to market faster, and with lower development costs.
