Hatteras Networks is best known for developing flexible Ethernet solutions for applications such as enterprise access and next-generation mobile backhaul.
The company’s latest product, the HN4000 EtherFLEX service delivery platform, delivers carrier-class Mid-Band Ethernet services and has won over 100 customers to date. With the platform, carriers can grow revenue by delivering—over their existing copper infrastructure—ten times more bandwidth at one tenth of the cost.
Delivering ethernet over copper is developing into a big business. Ethernet services delivery via platforms like the Hatteras Networks’ EtherFLEX service delivery solution, are driving a $21 billion expansion of the global Metro Ethernet market which had previously been limited to the fiber footprint.
Historically, T1s and E1s have been the fundamental building blocks for voice and data business services. With Ethernet services delivery, providers can cost-effectively offer up to 45 Mbps Mid-Band Ethernet services over existing copper facilities. That expanded capability enables businesses to migrate from legacy Frame Relay, ATM and T1/E1 connections to transparent Ethernet services for voice and data business connectivity, infrastructure backhaul and mobile wireless backhaul solutions.
The market expansion is an important one for carriers that is as significant for business services as “triple play” is for residential.
A recently announced deployment of the HN4000 is by Idaho-based Integra Telecom. The carrier’s Ethernet-over-copper deployment will enable Integra to rollout a highly resilient Metro Ethernet service offering at speeds of 5 to 30 Mbps to its business customers with initial deployments in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Boise, Idaho. The big benefit of using copper to deploy Ethernet is that the carrier can to broaden the service area for existing Internet access services without the need for new infrastructure.
