Rackmaster Systems Inc. announces a powerful new chassis designed for the SPARCengineTM UltraTM AXmp motherboard

Bloomington, MN—Rackmaster, a privately held manufacturer of durable rack mount computer systems and peripheral enclosures for the Intelâ market, today announced the release of it’s newly designed FRS (Fault Resilient Series) Ultra AXmp chassis, called the "Eclipse FRS". A fault tolerant enclosure designed specifically for the high power requirements of the Sun Microsystems SPARCengine Ultra AXmp quad processor motherboard, the enclosure is being positioned to meet the demanding requirements of this system with power to spare. "The SPARCengine Ultra AXmp provides outstanding compute density by combining the processing power of the UltraSPARCä processors with an innovative modular board design" said Stuart Taylor, Sun Microsystems product line manager. "Specialized enclosures like the Eclipse FRS from Rackmaster Systems will enable OEMs and systems integrators to bring their products to market more quickly to meet the demanding requirements of their markets". And, with Rackmaster focused on providing the SPARCengine marketplace with powerful, durable enclosures, rather than fully configured computer systems, they are a natural choice as a chassis supplier.

The Eclipse FRS enclosure is unique in many ways and promises to be a real workhorse. The chassis comes standard with three robust, hot swappable 400W power supplies to provide a level of redundancy unparalleled in the industry. In the event of a failure of one of the power supplies, an audible alarm is triggered and the LED’s on the front of the enclosure give a clear visual status of which power supply has failed. The failed power supply can be easily removed and replaced through the rear of the enclosure without taking the system down…a real plus for "mission critical systems".

Cooling has always been an issue in chassis design. The Elicpse FRS is again unique in providing three 120mm, 90 CFM cooling fans for the chassis and three dedicated 60mm 25CFM cooling fans, one for each power supply, to improve system durability and MTBF. Once again, there is no need to take the system down to remove a failed fan as the card cage fans are hot swappable and can be removed through the top cover without the use of tools. The placement of the fans has been carefully designed to assure maximum airflow, which is drawn through the front of the enclosure and exhausted out the rear of the system. Fan rotation speeds, and internal chassis temperature are carefully monitored by the system and displayed on a LCD panel on the front of the enclosure.

The Eclipse FRS is also unique in providing a level of expandability and flexibility that has not been available for SPARCengine applications. On the front side of the chassis, there are nine (9) half-height, vertical mount 5.25 " drive bays, two (2) horizontal mount 5.25 " half-height drive bays and two (2) horizontal mount 3.5" drive bays, making it versatile enough for even the most demanding integrator. Eight of the drive bays have a locking drive bay door option. With the addition of optional "hot swappable" drive canisters, the device mounting options allow the user to add up to 182GB of fault tolerant RAID storage per enclosure. And, with the addition of Rackmaster’s FRS SCSI Subsystem Chassis, multiple enclosures can be daisy-chained together to obtain additional on-line storage capacity.

Finally, the Eclipse is truly designed with easy system integration and servicing in mind. The chassis is designed with a removable motherboard mount at the rear of the chassis for quick, easy access. Additionally, the chassis can be configured as a rack mount (6U) chassis, a desktop or a tower chassis with the appropriate configuration kit.

The Eclipse FRS is designed to provide an added level of value in the chassis that truly compliments the SPARCengine motherboard. Quality, durability, design flexibility, expandability, serviceability and ease of integration make the Eclipse FRS a real value starting at $4320.00. It is scheduled to begin shipping on June 9, 1999. Rackmaster also offers a line of chassis for the AXiä motherboard. Orders are now being accepted.

Rackmaster Systems, Inc. Bloomington, Minnesota designs and manufactures Rack Mount enclosures for applications ranging from telecommunications and network servers to process control.
